RAPID CITY--The City's youth continue to utilize Rapid Transit services, with a solid increase of 9.75 percent in December over the previous month and a 27.70% increase over September, the first month youth were eligible to utilize RapidRide services free of charge.

Due to the holiday break and a snow day, there were 14 days of school in December.  There were 6,781 youth passenger trips during the 14 days of school in December, an average of 484 youth per day.  The average is 9.75 percent higher than the 441 average youth per day utilizing RapidRide during November's 18 days of school.   In September, when RapidRide services were extended free-of-charge to the community's youth, there were 379 youth passengers per day.  December's average per day is a 27.70% increase compared to September's average.

"The number of youth using RapidRide services when school is in session continues to rise each month.  We now have over 100 more youth passengers per day than when the program was expanded in September," said Rich Sagen, Rapid Transit Manager.  "As anticipated, RapidRide is serving as a convenient option for parents and children in getting to school, especially during the cold days of winter."

Overall ridership in Rapid Transit Service (RTS) was higher in December compared to the same month a year earlier.  Total passenger trips for RTS last month was 30,803 compared to 30,399 in December 2015.  December Monday-to-Friday RTS passenger trips per day were 1,531 compared to 1,377 in December 2015, an increase of 11.18 percent.
