Rapid City Stevens sophomore Jessica Benson, with the help of Rapid City Area Schools Teen Up group, is promoting patriotic socks to build community unity in honor of 9/11 and honor first responders.
Benson has ordered 300 pairs of patriotic socks which she plans to sell and profits will be used to host a Service Members Ball next Spring and also to the Rushmore Bowl. The socks will be worn by Rapid City Stevens and Rapid City Central volleyball teams during matches on September 8 and both the Raiders and Cobblers football teams will don the socks for the Rushmore Bowl games on September 9.
On Monday, Benson visited City Hall and Mayor Steve Allender, Fire Chief Mike Maltaverne and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lori Simon donned the socks as a way to build support for the project.
"It's really great to have the community support," Benson said.
Socks can be purchased at Rapid City Central and Rapid City Stevens high schools or at the Rushmore Bowl, or by contacting Jessica at 209-0975.
