Closure of indoor facility runs Aug. 1-Sept. 12;
50-meter pool will remain open
RAPID CITY, SD—City officials remind the public the Roosevelt Swim Center will close August 1 for six weeks for repairs to the leisure pool and other needed facility renovations.
Each year, the Center closes two weeks around Labor Day for annual operational cleaning and maintenance of the facility. The extended closure this summer is due to necessary repairs related to impacts of the shutdown of the facility during the COVID-19 pandemic. The facility’s outdoor 50-meter pool will remain open until the indoor facility is reopened. Completion date for the indoor repairs and renovation is projected for September 12.
“When we shut down the facility due to COVID last year, we drained the pool in April,” said City Recreation Division Manager Doug Lowe. “After draining the pool, the diamond brite floor in the leisure pool deteriorated. We need to do a total demolition of the flooring and then reapply the coating. The reapplication and curing process will take at least four weeks. We had scheduled this work for the future but the deterioration worsened with the pool drained and continued to worsen once it was refilled. It is to the point we cannot wait any longer.”
Other facility renovations include resurfacing of the hardwood floors of the racquetball courts and the multipurpose room. Indoor facility exercise classes will be suspended during the repairs and renovations.
City Rec officials indicate pass holders will have their facility use passes extended four weeks.
Beginning August 1 and extending to September 12, the facility’s outdoor 50-meter pool hours will be 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 1-8 p.m. Sundays. Officials are also encouraging the public to utilize the City’s outdoor pools at Parkview and Horace Mann through August 14 and the Jimmy Hilton Pool at Sioux Park through September 12.
