RAPID CITY, SD--Like a sculptor working feverishly on pounds of clay, workers have spent the last several months tirelessly transforming a large portion of Robbinsdale Park from a quiet, rustic gathering place that was showing its age in the southeast corner of Rapid City, into a modern attraction with numerous amenities.

What started as a dream to many people years ago turned into a flurry of activity beginning last fall with heavy earthmoving backhoes, dump trucks, mounds of dirt and piles of materials.  The result is a transformed Robbinsdale Park that city officials say will benefit and impact the community for decades.

There are still a few mounds of dirt and the sounds of hammers and power equipment can still be heard as workers forge ahead with the first phase of Park improvements.  Officials prepare to unveil some of the Park improvements next week.  No special events are planned and projected completion for the initial phase is set for October.

"Robbinsdale Park is being transformed and will serve as a community showpiece for decades into the future," said City Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Biegler.  "Robbinsdale Park is one of Rapid City's oldest parks and has served as a great place for picnics, shooting hoops, running your dog or for just quiet reflection.

"The new Park will still do that and much more with a variety of amenities and opportunities for people of all ages and for organizations to utilize."

The initial Park improvements are part of the Robbinsdale Park Master Plan, a lengthy planning process which included numerous community stakeholder meetings, open houses and information events.

The initial phase of the project included development of a new complex of Harney Little League baseball fields, a new and modernized BMX park, a walking trail, a bike path extension connecting the lower and upper Park picnic areas and road enhancements.  Park improvements also included removal of trees and undergrowth to improve storm drainage control in the northwest part of the park.  A stormwater detention pond is being constructed as part of greenway improvements.

""This phase of work includes the development of numerous improvements and amenities to the Park for the public to enjoy," said Scott Anderson, City Parks Division Manager.  "The Park is taking on an entirely new look and there is a lot for the public to experience and enjoy."

Anderson says additional phase work in the Park area will include upgrades to City streets in the vicinity of the Park area.  Additional phase work will continue through 2019.
