RC Library Hits Record-Breaking Summer Reading Numbers

Rapid City, SD – September 5, 2018 – Libraries nationwide host events and develop fun ways to encourage children to read during the summer to help prevent summer learning loss and Rapid City Public Library is no exception. Children read for 15 minutes per day for 25 and 50 days while school was out. This year, 29% more children turned in their completed reading logs. This accounts to a minimum of 523,125 minutes of reading local children did throughout the summer which equates to them reading 24/7 for an entire year.

Summer Reading isn’t just for children! The Adult Summer Reading scratch-off ticket promotion was so popular that participation numbers jumped 186% from the previous year.

Local teens read books from different genres and earned collectors buttons for each one such as diversity, science fiction and thriller. There was a 12% increase in teens involved in summer reading.

Lastly the library’s Summer Reading Kickoff Event in May and the Back to School with Harry Potter Event in August each saw over 1,000 attendees celebrating their love of reading.

The Rapid City Public Library has served the Rapid City area since 1879. Both locations offer print and electronic resources for adults, young adults and children, as well as computers, internet access and a variety of programs and events.
