Rapid Transit System Inviting Volunteers To 'Adopt-A-Stop'

RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM INVITING

VOLUNTEERS TO ‘ADOPT-A-STOP’

Participants can assist RTS

in cleaning, monitoring shelter and stop areas

RAPID CITY, SD—The City’s Rapid Transit System (RTS) is inviting volunteers to ‘Adopt-A-Stop’ this summer.  Participants can adopt a bus shelter, bench or high-traffic stop area and assist in keeping the area clean and monitored.

“It’s a great way for people to show pride in our community,” said Rapid Transit Operations Coordinator Kendra Magelky.  “Our focus is on the bus shelters, benches and stops in the high-traffic areas.  The volunteers can assist us in helping to keep these areas maintained and in great condition for RTS customers.”

With staffing shortages, RTS officials indicate the ‘Adopt-A-Stop’ volunteers can meet a great need by helping with upkeep at the bus stop areas.

Volunteers designate a day of the week they will maintain their designated area.  Duties include picking up and disposing trash in and around the stop area, clean the shelters, benches, sidewalks and signs as needed, and collecting any lost and found items and delivering them to the RTS depot.  Adoptees also agree to report issues such as needed repairs, graffiti, loitering or the need for clean-up assistance. Rapid Transit System will remove, replace or repair items if damaged and will remove pests such as wasps as well as difficult graffiti, bodily fluid cleanup as requested and trash liners from RTS receptacles.

Adoptions are for a period of one year and can be automatically renewed.  Volunteers must be 18 or older and must complete and submit an online or paper registration for consideration. To register or for more information about the ‘Adopt-A-Stop’ program, contact RTS at 605-394-6631.
