Rapid City Shatters October Record For Building Permit Activity

 RAPID CITY SHATTERS OCTOBER RECORD

FOR BUILDING PERMIT ACTIVITY

Three consecutive months of $40 million+ valuation totals;

Second highest number of roofing permits issued in 10 years

RAPID CITY, SD--Building permit activity in the city reached record levels again last month with the City's Building Services Division issuing 702 permits with a total valuation of $42,658,163.

            The valuation total was the highest-ever for the month of October, shattering the old mark of $27,041,520 from October 2007.

            For the year, the City has issued 4,948 building permits with a total valuation of $241,564,328.  For the first time ever, the City has recorded three consecutive months of more than $40 million in permit valuation, with a combined valuation total from August-October of more than $131.5 million.

            "It was another very solid month for activity," said Ken Young, the City's Department of Community Development director. "We were pleased with the level of activity and number of permits being issued after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and have been extremely pleased with how everything has taken off in recent months."

            The City issued seven permits in October, each valued at more than $1 million: two permits issued to Samuelson Development, LLC for 59-unit and 43-unit buildings as part of the Tallgrass project at 2212 E. Philadelphia ($6,500,000 and $5,500,000); BT-OH LLC for the new UPS building at 2540 Rearden Court ($5,614,593); Sharaf 5 Properties LLC for the Kansas City Street Plaza at 18 E. Kansas City Street ($4,225,000); ACME Warehouse LLC for a new Freed's facility ($2,700,000); Black Hills Orthopedic Partnership for an addition at 7220 Mount Rushmore Road ($1,530,000); and Yasmeen Dream LLC for a grading permit for a downstream channel and ponds on Johnson Ranch Road at ($1.1 million).

            The City also issued 466 residential roofing permits with a valuation total of $4.37 million.  October's residential roofing permit number brings the total number of residential roofing permits issued by the City in 2020 to 2,788, the most issued by the City in the last 10 years.
