The Department is currently accepting applications for the position of police officer. The RCPD is seeking highly motivated candidates from all walks of life to apply and test for the position. Successful candidates will be welcomed on to work for one of the most professional and progressive law enforcement agencies in the Midwest.

“It’s important to illustrate to potential candidates that there are a number of things that set the RCPD apart in terms of fostering a successful law enforcement career for our officers,” says Assistant Chief of Police Don Hedrick.

Even before they go to the State Police Academy in Pierre, newly hired officers of the RCPD can expect to be gain vital experience in a variety of law-enforcement-related areas including codified law, emergency driving, firearms, and defensive tactics. Following 13 weeks of training at the academy, the officers will return to the RCPD to complete the agency’s Police Officer Field Training Program which ensures officers are ready to hit the streets on their own.

“Working in law enforcement, you’re held to a very high standard,” says Chief Hedrick. “Starting on day one, our officers begin living the RCPD’s mission statement: Community First, Service Above Self, Integrity-Driven.”

The Rapid City Police Department is the only accredited law enforcement agency in the State of South Dakota. That means officers of the Rapid City Police Department operate under the highest standards for law enforcement as set by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The RCPD’s continued success in the accreditation process has earned it the status as a ‘Flagship Agency’ by CALEA.

Candidates applying from outside of the area can look forward to working for a highly supportive community nestled in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.

Applications are currently live in the ‘Jobs’ section of the city’s website, RCGov.org. Qualifications to apply include:

  • Must be at least 21 years-of-age by date of hire.
  • Must have an Associates degree, or the equivalent of 64 college credit hours; or four years of certified law enforcement experience; or four years of active full-time military experience.
