Rapid City Has Record-Setting Month For Building Permit Activity

RAPID CITY HAS RECORD-SETTING MONTH

FOR BUILDING PERMIT ACTIVITY

Nine-month total surpasses yearly totals of last five years

RAPID CITY, SD--It was a big September for building in Rapid City.

            The City's Building Services Division issued 950 building permits in September with a total valuation of $40,490,494.  It was the City's best September for permit valuation and the second-biggest September for permits issued.  By comparison, the City issued 492 permits with a total valuation of $25,672.258 in September 2019.

            The 950 permits issued last month was the third-most permits issued for any month for the City, surpassed only by the 1,146 permits issued in October 2013 and the 1,000 permits issued for September 2013.

            It has been a solid year for building activity in Rapid City.  A total of 4,246 building permits have been issued through September this year.  The nine-month total surpasses the yearly permit totals issued each year from 2015-2019, including the 3,974 permits issued all of last year.  The valuation total through September is $198,906,164.

            "We are extremely pleased with the amount of continued building activity going on in Rapid City," said Ken Young, the City's Department of Community Development director. "We continue to be impressed with the amount of work going on, whether it's do-it-yourself and roofing projects to the building of homes, apartment complexes and other areas."

            Top permits issued last month include Lloyd Construction Company for a 96-unit apartment complex at 1466 Catron Boulevard ($7,509,108) and 36-unit complexes at 1330 Catron Boulevard and 1442 Catron Boulevard ($2,815,915 each); Rapid City Area Schools for renovations at West Middle School, 1003 Soo San Drive ($1,872,120); and site improvements including parking lot at Shepherd Meadows, 1770 E. Philadelphia ($1,700,000).
