The Rapid City Fire Department hosted a demonstration at Fire Station 3 Thursday morning on the importance of residential fire protection sprinkler systems.

Two small units with similar equipment were part of the display with one unit equipped with a single sprinkler. The alarm sounded about 10 seconds after the fire was started in both units. It took about 22 seconds for the sprinkler to engage in the equipped unit, minimizing damage to a lamp shade and fringe of a curtain.

The other non-equipped unit was engulfed in flames and was a total loss in just over two minutes.

Residential fire protection sprinkler systems are the only tool available to fight fires before fire departments can arrive, say officials with the Rapid City Fire Department.  If response time from a 9-1-1 dispatch call is a quick 6-10 minutes, it can take just a couple minutes to fully engulf the room and have a full head start on an entire home.
