RAPID CITY, SD--As spring approaches and temperatures begin an upward swing, the City receives an increased number of requests for special event and parade permits.

City permits are required for parades and special events on City property.  Scheduled walks, demonstrations, processions and marches using City streets, sidewalks, alleys or other public thoroughfares are classified by City ordinance 12.20 as a parade and any planned assembly, block party, demonstration, rally or gathering of a group of 25 or more persons, animals and vehicles utilizing a public space, including parks, are classified as special events.

The City's Parks Department oversees the permit application process.  The permit application fee is $50.   Applicants must also provide a certificate of insurance showing the City of Rapid City and its representatives as an additional insured.  Application and information is available at the Parks Department website at  https://www.rcgov.org/departments/parks-recreation/special-events-834.html  . Per ordinance 12.20, event organizers are requested to submit applications 90 days in advance.

City officials, including the Parks and Recreation Department and the Rapid City Police Department, review and evaluate applications to determine impacts on neighboring businesses, properties, traffic flow and public safety and overall conformance with permit provisions.

Events such as picnics or gatherings in reserved public park spaces, funeral processions and events held within the boundary of Main Street Square do not require special event permits.

For more information about special event and parade permits, contact the City Parks and Recreation Department at 394-4175.
