CITY POOLS CONTINUE
TO SEE BIG NUMBERS
RAPID CITY, SD—Seeking relief from the long-standing hot weather continued to motivate the public to flock to City pools in July. Attendance at the City’s outdoor pools for June and July far outpace the numbers from 2019. City pools were closed last summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Comparing June/July numbers from this summer to 2019, there has been a 26.75 percent increase in swimmers at the Horace Mann pool, a 43.86 percent increase in attendance at the Jimmy Hilton Sioux Park pool and a 22.31 percent increase in use at the Parkview pool. There has been less than a one percent decline in numbers at the Roosevelt Swim Center, combined use of the outdoor 50-meter pool and the indoor pools.
Here are the June/July attendance totals for the City pools for 2019 and 2021, along with numbers for the period of July 4-31.
POOL 2019 Attendance 2021 Attendance (July 4-31)
Horace Mann 10,403 13,616 6,683
Hilton/Sioux Park 10,376 16,205 7,793
Parkview 9,293 11,626 5,704
Swim Center 22,780 22,584 10,209
“We’ve continued to see great numbers at our pools,” said City Recreation Specialist Emily Carstensen. “We expect continued hot weather in August and continued usage. School will start later in the month and that will impact the number of swimmers and also the number of lifeguards we will have on a daily basis. We’ll be closing a couple of our pools but making sure to have a couple open well into September.”
The last day for swimming at the Parkview and Horace Mann pools is Saturday, August 14. The Sioux Park Jimmy Hilton pool and the Roosevelt Swim Center’s 50-meter outdoor pool will remain open into September with the last day of swimming at both sites scheduled for Sunday, September 12.
City officials are also reminding the public, effective Sunday (August 1), the indoor portion of the Roosevelt Swim Center is closed to public access for repairs of the leisure pool and other facility renovations. This includes suspension of the exercise classes and use of the racquetball courts. The indoor facility will remain closed through September 12. The hours for the 50-meter pool have been expanded during the renovation period, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 1-8 p.m. on Sundays.
PUBLIC MAKES BIG SPLASH
AT CITY POOLS IN JUNE
RAPID CITY, SD—Attendance at the City’s outdoor pools for the first month of the summer season is making a big – in a word – splash!
Blame it on the constant hot temperatures or the 21-month hiatus when pools were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic or both, but the public is getting their fill of some quality H2O this summer. Attendance for the first month of the summer at both the Horace Mann and Parkview pools is more than 50 percent higher than the numbers of 2019 and the attendance at the Jimmy Hilton pool at Sioux Park is more than double the attendance of two years ago.
The attendance numbers at the Roosevelt Swim Center are virtually the same for the first month of this summer compared to the same period in 2019.
“It’s been a very busy summer at the pools,” said City Recreation Specialist Emily Carstensen. “It was a very hot June and the public sought relief at our pools. We’ll see what the weather has in store for the rest of the summer but we were definitely pleased with the numbers for the first month of the summer season.”
Compare these numbers:
POOL 2019 Attendance 2021 Attendance
Horace Mann 4,574 6,933
Hilton/Sioux Park 3,741 8,412
Parkview 3,782 5,922
Swim Center 12,389 12,375
The numbers are a comparison between the dates of June 4 to July 3 of this summer compared to May 31 to June 29, 2019.
