Mayor's Committee Hosting Annual ADA Celebration

Event Recognizes Impacts of Americans with Disabilities Act on community, citizens

RAPID CITY, SD--The Mayor's Committee for People With Disabilities will host the 28th annual Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Celebration event, Friday from 5-8 p.m. at the Canyon Lake Activity Center, 2900 Canyon Lake Drive.

            The event recognizes the impacts of ADA on the community and for people with disabilities.   The event will include a mayoral proclamation presented by City Council member Jason Salamun, food, prizes and vendor booths and is free and open to the public.   Attendees are encouraged to arrange transportation services in advance of the event.

            Event sponsors include Rapid City Pita Pit, Coca-Cola Bottling Company High Country, Firehouse Brewing Company and the Canyon Lake Activity Center.

WHEREAS, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed on July 26, 1990 to ensure the civil rights of citizens with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, Rapid City, South Dakota affirms the principals of equality and inclusion for persons with disabilities as set forth for the State of South Dakota and as embodied in the ADA, the laws of the State of South Dakota and ordinances of Rapid City; and

WHEREAS, the ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, state and local government services, commercial facilities and telecommunications; and

WHEREAS, through the dedicated and tireless efforts of officials, organizations and advocates, many strides have been made, and work continues, in breaking down the physical and attitudinal barriers that have challenged people with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, July 26, 2018 celebrates the 28th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Steve Allender, Mayor of the City of Rapid City, South Dakota do hereby proclaim July 27, 2018, as

Americans with Disabilities Act Awareness Day
