Mayor Steve Allender provided his '2018: Year In Review" Progress Report presentation at a press conference with local media January 31.
The purpose of the presentation is to provide an update on the City's progress on a variety of projects and issues, take a look at accomplishments from 2018 and look ahead to the City's goals and objectives for 2019. Topics included sales tax trends, building permit activity, the status of current projects, challenges and priorities for the City.
During the hour-long presentation, the mayor provided updates on the Civic Center Arena, Rush Hockey, the work of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, code enforcement, efforts of the City's Community Development Department and planning divisions and building permit activity. The work of the Citizen Vision Fund Committee was detailed as was specific work and numbers coming from Rapid City Regonal Airport, Rapid City Public Library, Rapid City Police, the City's IT Department and Rapid Transit System's Youth Ride Free Program.
Future challenges as defined by the mayor included housing needs in the community, expansion of the mission and numbers of personnel at Ellsworth Air Force Base and Elevate Rapid City's push in a number of economic development areas. Priorities looking ahead include Civic Center Arena construction, work on the homelessness issue, community engagement on City boards and committees, identifying development options for the city lot formerly known as Presidents Plaza and early childhood education.
