MAYOR, CITY COUNCIL SHARE THANKSGIVING SENTIMENTS

City officials thankful for family, friends, community;

Share special memories of the holiday

RAPID CITY, SD--The Thanksgiving Day celebration is an opportunity to come together with family and friends, share great experiences and memories and reflect on the reasons for giving thanks this holiday season.

Rapid City Mayor Steve Allender and members of the Rapid City Council have shared their thoughts as we approach Thanksgiving.  Collectively, the city officials share their best wishes to the community for a safe, enjoyable and memorable holiday season and that everyone has an opportunity to reflect on what they are most thankful for this Thanksgiving.

**MAYOR STEVE ALLENDER**

THIS THANKSGIVING, WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR?  "I am thankful for family, friends and the many opportunities we have.  We live in a wonderful part of the country, a wonderful part of the state and in a wonderful community. I am also thankful for the many dedicated City employees who spend much of their time, energy and talent providing service to others."

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL MEMORY OF THANKSGIVING?  "Certainly, the day was always centered on food – the unusual type of food seen only once per year. As a kid, my favorite part of the meal was turkey dressing (stuffing for you southerners). In addition to dressing, I remember being virtually force-fed and told these other unusual foods were so good, and “just try it” was a common theme from my parents. Cranberry sauce? This gelatinized, gross can-shaped quivering mass on the table cannot be for human consumption, can it be? If it is so good, why haven’t we had it in the past 364 days?  Overall, I survived and have good memories of Thanksgiving growing up."

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL MEMORY OF THANKSGIVING?  "The nice thing about getting older is I have more memories to reflect on.  Thinking about Thanksgiving over the years, I have memories of watching NFL football games and playing family football games in the back yard, aroma therapy memories that are brought back each time I smell turkey and all the fixings of family members and friends gathered around the table, and memories of times we, as a family, decided to give back to the community together as a reflection of all that we are grateful for in our lives.

THIS THANKSGIVING, WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR?  I am truly thankful for the good health that allows me to remember past celebrations, enjoy this current season, and look forward to many more Thanksgivings in the future.  Here's to wishing each and every person good health, sound minds, and the blessings of God, our Father.  Have a safe and memorable Thanksgiving!"

THIS THANKSGIVING, WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR?  "Thanksgiving and Veterans Day are two holidays that call upon my heart to be thankful. November 11, I had the opportunity to attend the Veteran’s Day parade and luncheon at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) 1243. I am forever grateful for the men and women who have fought and served our country. We enjoy freedoms in America that most other countries can’t even imagine. Those freedoms are the result of our Veterans who served, fought and died for you and me.

I am also thankful for those who currently serve our armed services. They are protecting our country day-in and day-out to preserve our values and freedoms. Thank you.

On my home front, my husband is loving, supportive and faithful to our lives together. I am blessed to have his love daily. Of course, our daughters and grandchildren are a joy and blessing to us. Each one is unique, special and loved to the moon and back.

I am also thankful for what is to come. I believe our tomorrows are as wonderful as we expect them to become. We are never too young or too old to make a difference.. We each have a calling or job (however how big or small) that we can and should be doing in our church, family or community.

Lastly, I am thankful for my salvation through Jesus Christ, His mercies endure forever. Have a blessed Thanksgiving."

THIS THANKSGIVING, WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR?  "Our wonderful community that is filled with  caring and giving and people making this the best City to live and work and raise families."

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL MEMORY OF THANKSGIVING? "Making Turkey and Pumpkin Pies that warmed up the kitchen of holiday scents and family gathered together."

**STEVE LAURENTI**

THIS THANKSGIVING, WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR?  "I'm most thankful for God's blessings in my life.  I'm thankful for my family and good health.  I'm thankful for the freedoms that we all share."

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL MEMORY OF THANKSGIVING?  "Best memory is family coming together during this time each year.  A couple of my Mom's sisters, my Aunts, would rotate the duty of hosting Thanksgiving each year.  They are all excellent cooks so overeating was absolutely necessary for me on Thanksgiving."

**RITCHIE NORDSTROM**

WARD TWO COUNCIL MEMBER

THIS THANKSGIVING, WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR?   "I'm most thankful for some of the unintended taken for granted blessing in my life. Health, home and family.  A great community to live with a pleasant work place with people doing the best with what they have."

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL MEMORY OF THANKSGIVING?  "Carving my first turkey! In the years previous Thanksgiving was at my Parents home, followed by Thanksgiving in Japan, eventually getting Stateside.  Turkey Day, I call it, has been good every year."

**JASON SALAMUN**

WARD THREE COUNCIL MEMBER

THIS THANKSGIVING, WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR? "I'm most thankful for the life the Good Lord has given me. All the ups and downs have led me to this point in my life. I'm blessed to have a wonderful family, loyal friends, and a special community to call home.  I'm particularly grateful for all those who keep watch over us and stand ready to run to the rescue if needed. May we never take our military members, law enforcement officers, fire departments, and medical community for granted. Thank you all for what you do and may God bless you all."

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL MEMORY OF THANKSGIVING? "One of my earliest memories is spending Thanksgiving Day at my Maw Maw and Paw Paw's (that's Texan for Grandma and Grandpa). I can still remember the smell of the southern feast being prepared by my Maw Maw as I sat on my Paw Paw's lap watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I felt so warm and safe in that moment. It's a simple memory, but that image and feeling has been pressed in my memory like a scene in a movie. Maw Maw and Paw Paw have since passed on, but I can't help but think of them (and miss them) each Thanksgiving.

THIS THANKSGIVING, WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR?  "I am most thankful for friends and family and I'm thankful for what a wonderful year it has been from work to family and friends.   I am blessed with wonderful family and friends and to live in a wonderful community where I am able to give some of my time.  The City is moving in a more positive direction for the first time in years and we have a pretty good Council.

THIS THANKSGIVING, WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR? "I am thankful for this community and grateful we can all come together.

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL MEMORY OF THANKSGIVING?  "Getting together at my grandparents' house in Chamberlain.  It was a gathering of a large extended family with 25-35 people.  They would have a wild bird feed with lots of goose, duck and pheasant.  You had to watch out for the shot.  Sometimes, Thanksgiving fell on my birthday so people would bring me presents, which I really enjoyed.

THIS THANKSGIVING, WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR?   "I did something a little different this year. I wrote a poem."

I am grateful for sunshine

Thankful for the rain.

I seek simple pleasures

Hope for lessons from the pain.

I'm grateful for my strength

And yet, my weaknesses abound.

Whenever I am challenged

There is support to be found.

I am grateful for Spirit

and love and the light.

With each day may I find peace

and the strong will to fight.

I am thankful for family,

my pets and my friends.

Humbled by their faith in me

And pray it never ends.

Gratitude is something

That is always on my mind.

When I look deep into my soul

There is always more I can find.

Happy Thanksgiving!
