LIBRARY’S NEW BOOKMOBILE MAKES FIRST STOP AT FOUNDER’S PARK

Ribbon-cutting ceremony set for Tuesday morning

RAPID CITY, SD—The bright, multi-colored Rapid City Public Library Bookmobile has finally taken to the streets of Rapid City!

Years of dedicated efforts by library officials, board members, supporters and staff became reality Friday morning when Rapid City Public Library’s Bookmobile made its maiden voyage to Founder’s Park!

The bookmobile’s first customer arrived 20 minutes before the 11 a.m. opening to get a look at the offerings and to return some library books.  The first library card was issued to the City’s communications coordinator.

There are more than 2,000 items in the bookmobile - from books and games to movies and CDs - as well as various services from issuing library cards, placing orders and checking on availability of items.  The bookmobile is wheelchair-accessible, there is an area to return items, an area to sit and browse through a book or two and a checkout area.  There is also an outdoor screen available to watch documentaries, learn about upcoming library programs and maybe catch a children’s movie.

“What a beautiful day for our bookmobile to make its first appearance in the community,” said Library Director Terri Davis.  “Our official ribbon-cutting ceremony is next week and we couldn’t wait to show it off, drive it around some, and pay a visit to a popular spot in the community.  It’s the first of what will be many community and area visits this summer and moving forward well into the future.”

The bookmobile will be making 10 visits in Rapid City and Box Elder through the end of May, including the Black Hills Farmers Market and Family Food Truck Night.  An official ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 8:15 am next Tuesday in front of the Rapid City Public Library, 610 Quincy Street.

The Rapid City Public Library has been serving Rapid City since 1879.
