Trucks with new monikers to make rounds
in time for National Garbage Man Day June 17
RAPID CITY, SD—Winners of last month’s ‘Name The Garbage Truck’ contest will christen nine City trucks with new names and receive prizes next Tuesday at the Rapid City Landfill.
Winners will receive prizes and get their pictures taken with the newly-named trucks Tuesday at 3 p.m.
More than 800 votes were cast during the voting phase of the contest which began earlier this year when the City sought the public’s help in naming nine City garbage trucks. The request reeled in 315 submittals with suggestions. The extensive list was cut to 35 finalists and the public voted for their favorites. The winners:
‘Sir Dumps A Lot’ suggested by Megan Raftery
‘Cindersmella’ suggested by Ann Eads
‘Mt. Trashmore’ suggested by Rene Larson
‘Obi-One-Can-Only’ suggested by Conni Ostendorf
‘Litter Gitter’ suggested by Aaron Wirtz
‘Cruncher the Muncher’ suggested by Gina Lemon
‘Smashasaurus’ suggested by Heather Jeffery
‘Brutus’ suggested by Lorinne Sachau
‘Oscar’ suggested by Bobbie Klaski
“We are looking forward to placing the names on the trucks and meeting the winners,” said Jancie Knight, outreach coordinator for the City’s Solid Waste Division. “The contest had an overwhelming community response with hundreds of creative suggestions submitted and hundreds who participated in the naming of the trucks.
“We’ve heard from many people who are looking forward to seeing the trucks in their neighborhoods.”
The trucks with the new monikers are getting their new labels just in time as Thursday, June 17 is National Garbage Man Day, an opportunity to recognize the work of solid waste employees and their importance to the community.
