City Tops $300 Million In Building Permit Valuation For Third Consecutive Year

RAPID CITY, SD--For the third consecutive year, the City of Rapid City issued building permits with a combined total valuation in excess of $300 million.

With one month of the calendar year remaining, the City has issued 3,539 building permits with a total valuation of $307,354,989.  The total surpasses last year's valuation total of $302,570,950.  In 2016, the City surpassed the $300-million mark for the first time with $320 million reported in building permit valuation.

For November, the City's Building Services Division issued 213 building permits for a total valuation in the month of $9,692,550.05.

"Overall, the numbers have been solid for the year.  We had a record January and big months in February, April and May.  We've had a leveling off the past couple months and we used to be very pleased when we hit the $200 million threshold, so to have three consecutive years of more than $300 million in building permit valuation is outstanding," said Ken Young, Director of the City's Department of Community Development.

In 2007, the City surpassed the $200 million mark in valuation for the first time ($212.6 million) then worked through the Great Recession years of 2008-2010.  In 2011, the City again reached the $200 million mark in valuation and continued the trend from 2011-2015 before surpassing the $300 million mark each of the past three years.

Top-valued permits in November included Black Hills Surgery Center for commercial expansion at 216 Anamaria Drive ($1,620,000); Rapid City Regional Hospital for its Same Day Surgery facility at 651 Cathedral Drive ($1,428,096); a single family dwelling with attached garage at 6003 Cloud Peak Drive ($541,532) and Hay Land LLC for the Fleet Farm grading permit at 1001 E. Mall Drive ($500,000).
