City Permits For New Housing Remained Steady in 2018

CITY PERMITS FOR NEW HOUSING REMAINED STEADY IN 2018

Permits holding at seven-year average; valuations highest since 2014

RAPID CITY, SD--Housing starts in Rapid City remain steady according to numbers released by the City's Building Services Division.

            The City issued 203 permits in 2018 for single family dwelling (SFD) units with a total valuation of more than $40 million.

            The valuation total of $40,167,497 was the highest valuation total issued for SFDs since 2014, when the City issued 230 permits with a combined valuation of $42,556,684.  The City has averaged 203 building permits for SFDs for the period of 2012-18 with a valuation average of $39,772,571.

            "The housing numbers are holding steady, both in terms of permits issued and the valuation totals," said City Community Development Director Ken Young.  "There is a good foundation for housing growth in Rapid City and the need and demand for more housing in Rapid City remains strong and shows no signs of slowing in the years ahead."

            Included in single family dwelling unit designations are detached and attached units, commonly referred as townhouses.
