City Making Changes at Remote Disposal Sites

CITY MAKING CHANGES

AT REMOTE DISPOSAL SITES

**City will close West Boulevard North site;

**Fitzgerald site losing newspaper recycling container;

**City’s curbside yard waste collection resumes May 2

RAPID CITY, SD—The City’s Solid Waste Division is announcing upcoming changes at its remote disposal facilities at the Fitzgerald Stadium and West Boulevard North sites.

            Effective May 1, the following changes will be implemented by the Solid Waste Division:

FITZGERALD STADIUM: The remote yard waste containers will be available for disposal beginning Sunday, May 1.  There will be no newspaper recycling container at the site.  Plastic and cardboard recycling containers will continue to be available for disposal.  No dumping of trash or other items.  Yard waste, plastic and cardboard must be placed inside the containers at the site.

WEST BOULEVARD NORTH:  The remote site will not reopen to the public this season.  Containers will no longer be placed at the site for yard waste, newspaper and cardboard recycling items.  Items can be taken to the Fitzgerald Stadium site or to the Rapid City Landfill.

City Public Works officials say the decision to close the West Boulevard North facility was a difficult one and is based on a number of factors including the continued illegal dumping of trash and large items such as furniture, appliances and other materials by the public at the site, as well as the cleanup time of such materials by Solid Waste crews, and the shortage of staff.  Officials will continue to monitor the overall issue of yard waste collection at both sites to determine if the West Boulevard North site can be reopened at a later time.

CURBSIDE SERVICE: Beginning Monday, May 2, curbside collection of city yard waste will resume for customers on the City’s trash collection system.  Yard waste must be properly placed in the recyclable brown paper sacks and placed curbside on the day of curbside collection.  Branches and sticks need to be bundled and tied up for collection.  The bundles need to be under 25 pounds and under four feet in length. Large branches and tree limbs must be taken to the Fitzgerald Stadium or Landfill sites.

RAPID CITY LANDFILL:  The transfer site located at the entrance of the Landfill is open 24/7.  The site provides containers for yard waste, newspaper, cardboard and mixed recycling items year-round.
