RAPID CITY HAS GONE TO THE DOGS!

City Ranks In Top 100 of

'The Best Places To Visit With Your Dog'

RAPID CITY, SD--It's official!  Rapid City has gone to the dogs!

People looking for a doggone good time with their four-legged canine companions can find it in Rapid City, according to a national survey by Reviews.com.  In a review of 567 possible destinations, Rapid City was the only South Dakota city to rank in the top 100, coming in at number 95.  Rapid City and Sheridan were the only two cities to make the top 100 in the five-state region including South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and Nebraska.  Sheridan ranked 97th out of the 567 cities researched.

Top cities were chosen by reviewing 1,000 of the country's biggest tourist destinations and filtering out areas full of traffic, concrete and crowds -- "definitely not conducive to a doggone good time" according to Reviews.com.  The frontrunners were then ranked against seven criteria including: number of dog parks, availability of dog trails, amount of dog-friendly restaurants, options for dog-friendly lodging, nearby dog-friendly beaches, availability of dog daycares and nearby veterinarians or emergency clinics.  The criteria were grouped into two different city scores: amenities and outdoor activities.

Rapid City ranked 74th for dog amenities and 64th for outdoor activities.  Rapid City's overall 'Dog Friendliness' score was 43.77.  The top five cities of the 567 researched were Scottsdale, AZ; Charleston, SC; Nashville, TN; Salt Lake City, UT and Jacksonville, FL.

Among city amenities for outdoor activities for dogs include off-leash dog parks at Robbinsdale Park, Wilderness Park, Braeburn Park, Memorial Park East, Vickie Powers Park and Knollwood Drainage Area.  Add the leash and the City's bike path and a total of 35 City parks offer a number of recreational opportunities for resident and visiting canines. Special canine events during the year include the upcoming Wags and Waves event at Sioux Park's Jimmy Hilton Pool on Tuesday, Sept. 3, hosted by the Humane Society of the Black Hills (see next story below).

Canine Pool Party Fundraiser Returns: Wags & Waves 2019

RAPID CITY, S.D. ― Although summer is nearing its end, we aren’t done celebrating yet!  On Tuesday, Sept. 3rd, 2019, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. the Humane Society of the Black Hills would like to extend an invite to the community to our fourth annual end of summer event at the Jimmy Hilton Pool.  This is a dog and family-friendly event where pet lovers and canines unite to enjoy a dip (or dive) in the pool.  As always, attendees may bring tennis balls and Frisbees to add to the fun.  The Humane Society of the Black Hills encourages a $5.00 donation per dog upon entry to help with the care of over 4,800 animals seen each year at the shelter.

Some simple guidelines apply to attendees: Dogs must be under owner control and supervision at all times, humans cannot go in the water above their knees, and owners must pick up after their pets to keep the area clean and enjoyable for all.

Thank you to Rapid City Parks and Recreation and the Rapid City community for supporting the Humane Society of the Black Hills to make another Wags and Waves event possible.
