City Enjoys Record February For Single Family Home Permits

$22 million month for permit valuation

RAPID CITY, SD—The City’s Building Services Division issued a record number of permits for single family homes in a February calendar month, part of a solid month of permit activity overall for the City.  A total of 241 permits were issued for the month with a total valuation of $22,055,205 ($22.05 million).

            For the first two months of the year, the City has issued 495 building permits with a total valuation of more than $53.41 million. 

By comparison, the City issued 180 building permits in February 2020 with a valuation of $19.13 million.  At this time last year, the City had issued 406 building permits with a valuation total of more than $29.44 million.

Permits issued under the classification of single family homes reached record levels for February with the City issuing 34 single family house permits with a total valuation of $6.98 million.  The permit number surpasses the previous February record for single family home permits set in February 2015 (30).

The City has also issued 17 permits for garages or carports during the first two months of 2021, compared to four during the first two months of 2020.

“It all adds up,” said Community Development Director Ken Young.  “Whether its permits issued for roofing or do it yourself projects, single family homes or apartment complexes, commercial development or renovations and expansions, we are continuing to see steady building activity in Rapid City.”

The top-valued permits issued by the City in February: Monument Health Rapid City Hospital for the foundation and structure permit for the Cancer Care Institute’s addition at 353 Fairmont Boulevard ($6.15 million); Monument Health for renovations at the Wound Care facility, 2929 Fifth Street ($932,000); Monument Health for renovations to its fifth floor ICU facility, 353 Fairmont Boulevard ($918,500); Community Enhancement LLC for Salon Academy, 937 E. North Street ($649,934); KAD Properties LLC for PDR Auto Body, 1305 E. Highway 44 ($598,654); and THF Stonebridge Development LLC for alterations at Sanford Health, 36 E. Stumer Road ($532,000).
