RAPID CITY, SD--Beginning this week (early November), City crews are transforming downtown Rapid City and major park areas into a holiday wonderland, putting up Christmas holiday decorations and lights.

City Parks Department crews are in Halley Park decorating trees and other landscaping fixtures and also starting the process of decorating trees in the downtown intersection node areas on Main Street, St. Joseph Street, Sixth and Seventh Streets.

Parks Division Manager Scott Anderson says crews will begin to install streetlight pole decorations downtown next Tuesday after Monday's Veterans Day events.  Crews will take down the veterans banners and replace them with the holiday decorations for the season.  Additional decoration work will be done in Wilson Park.

The Mount Rushmore Road Group has already installed holiday decorations on Mount Rushmore Road poles from Quincy Street to Cleveland Street.

Anderson says the City ornamentation will take on somewhat of a new look as the Parks Department has started the process of replacing old decorations.

"We have some new decorations beginning this season to replace some of our aging, broken-down ornaments," said Anderson.  "We will be replacing our entire inventory of decorations over the next three to four years.

"Crews are using the next two weeks to decorate downtown and the major park areas because you never know what turn the weather will take, plus we want everything looking nice and ready for the community holiday celebrations."

The annual Wilson Park Tree-Lighting Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, November 26 and the annual Festival of Lights parade and activities are scheduled downtown on Saturday, November 30.

Most of the lights and decorations will remain up past New Year's Day with the downtown tree decorations remaining up through the Black Hills Stock Show.
