Bike path users advised to use street level crossings at Mount Rushmore Road, Canyon Lake Drive;
Public reminded to use abundance of caution around Rapid Creek due to increased water releases
RAPID CITY, SD (Updated June 8)--Two bike path crossings remain closed in Rapid City due to flooding from increased water releases from Pactola Reservoir. City officials are advising the public to avoid using the City bike path near the Mount Rushmore Road and Canyon Lake Drive underpass crossings.
City Parks staff placed barricades on the bike path at the Mount Rushmore Road and Canyon Lake Drive underpasses last week due to water inundating the bike path. The public remains advised not to ride or walk through the flooded water on the bike path (or any area) and to use the street level crossings in these areas. Due to the inflows of water coming into Pactola Reservoir causing at or excess Reservoir capacity, the Bureau of Reclamation, the Army Corps of Engineers and the City of Rapid City have coordinated increased releases of water from Pactola.
Any time bike path users see flooded waters over the path DO NOT CROSS. Do not attempt to walk, run, or bike through these areas and use the street crossings in affected areas.
With increased depth and velocity of the water, City officials remind the public to use an abundance of caution around Rapid Creek.
