CANDIDATES FILE
FOR RAPID CITY MAYOR, CITY COUNCIL
RAPID CITY, SD—Several candidates turned in petitions for Rapid City mayor and candidates emerged in each of Rapid City’s five Council wards prior to today’s 5 p.m. deadline. The municipal election is scheduled for Tuesday, June 6.
Five candidates will vie for a four-year term as Rapid City’s next mayor. Incumbent Mayor Steve Allender is not seeking reelection. Candidates running for mayor are (in alphabetical order) Laura Armstrong, Brad Estes, Josh Lyle, Jason Salamun and Ron Weifenbach.
For City Council, one position is up for election for a three-year term representing each of the City’s five wards.
In Ward One, incumbent Pat Jones, Josh Biberdorf and Jerry Long will be vying for the position. There will also be a three-way race for the Ward Three Council position between Rob Keighron, Chad Lewis and Kevin Maher. Incumbent Jason Salamun is not seeking reelection to Council and is running for mayor.
In Ward Four, incumbent John Roberts and Valeriah Big Eagle will be vying for a three-year term on the Council.
The other two wards will have uncontested races with one candidate filing in each ward and will be seated on the City Council without election. The new Council member in Ward Two is Lindsey Seachris as incumbent Ritchie Nordstrom is not running for reelection. In Ward Five, Rod Pettigrew will be seated on the new Council with incumbent Laura Armstrong running for mayor.
Voter registration deadline is May 22, the same day early voting is scheduled to begin.
Candidates must file a Statement of Financial Interest within 15 days after filing their nominating petitions, and must also file a Statement of Organization for a Candidate Campaign Committee not later than 15 days after becoming a candidate. All required forms must be filed with the City Finance Office.
Candidates elected June 6 will take office at the July 3 City Council meeting.
