$45,000 Yearly Grant Will Help Support Program For Next Three Years
RAPID CITY, SD--The Corporation for National and Community Service announced this week Black Hills Area Retired Senior Volunteer Program+ (RSVP+) is one of three South Dakota programs to receive grant funding to support senior volunteer service.
The local award supports the program, providing $45,301 each year for the next three years. The Corporation for National and Community Service supports senior volunteer service in more than 150 communities nationwide, including Rapid City.
The City of Rapid City has served as community sponsor for Black Hills RSVP+ for more than 35 years. More than 500 volunteers make up the Rapid City RSVP+ organization, donating more than 10,000 hours of community service each month to the Rapid City, Hot Springs, Hill City, Keystone, New Underwood and Wall areas. Many of the volunteers have been volunteering for RSVP for decades.
"This is very good news and it's a tribute to the great dedicated work of hundreds of volunteers who are making a difference in Rapid City and surrounding communities each day," said Rapid City RSVP+ Manager Ann Hines. "The Corporation's grant award coupled with the City's continued sponsorship provides important funding and support for our program, and it also allows our volunteers to continue sharing their talents, knowledge and skills in their communities."
The Retired Senior Volunteer Program is a federally-funded program through the Corporation of National Service and provides opportunities for adults age 55 and over to share their life experiences and skills in their community. Examples include teaching children or adults to read, mentoring children, delivering meals to home bound seniors and provide assistance to local nonprofit organizations. The (+) part of RSVP+ allows citizens of all ages to sharing in the volunteer experience.
In addition to Rapid City, RSVP organizations in Pierre and Yankton also received federal grant awards.
