The Zoning Board promotes the health, safety and general welfare of the community by granting variances to the ordinances found in Title 17 of the Rapid City Municipal Codes.
Number of Members
Members of the Zoning Board of Adjustment are also members of the Planning Commission.
Individuals with expertise in civil engineering, architecture, real estate, land development, public or private utilities, law, public education, government, community services, business, industry, environmental matters, family issues or any other specialty that will provide a broad, qualified and balanced representation of the community are encouraged to apply.
Residency/Registered Voter Requirement
10 members must be residents of Rapid City, 1 member must reside within the three mile jurisdictional area.
Summary of Duties
The duties of the Board shall be to exercise the powers discussed in RCMC 17.54.010(B) and in State law. Where there are practical difficulties or unnecessary hardship of carrying out the strict letter of this title, in any way, the Board shall have the power, in passing upon appeals, to authorize the variance from the terms of this title as will not be contrary to the public interest and so that the intent of Title 17 of the Rapid City Municipal Code shall be observed and substantial justice done.
Meetings are held on Thursdays at 7:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers. (11 days prior to the following City Council meeting)
