The City's Parks and Recreation Department will host a Denver Nuggets Skills Challenge Sunday, December 18 at South Community Gym from 1-5 p.m.

The event is free and winners advance to compete at the Sectional Skills Challenge in Colorado.  The Denver Nuggets Skills Challenge is open to boys and girls ages 6-13 with competition in dribbling, passing and shooting skills.  There are four age divisions: 6/7, 8/9, 10/11 and 12/13 for both boys and girls with April 30, 2017 as the date for age determination.  The top scorer in each age group from each local competition advances to sectional competition and top scorers in each age group at sectionals advance to the state championship.

Last year, there were 80 participants at the local level and the first place winner competed at sectionals and two individuals earned first place honors as well as two additional individuals received at-large invitations to the state level.  One local youth received first place honors at the state event.

"This is a great opportunity for boys and girls to have fun and show off their basketball skills," said Kristy Lintz, City Recreation Program Specialist. "There was a lot of interest last year locally and there many levels of competition."

The state championship will be held April 1, 2017 at a site to be determined and will include a Denver Nuggets basketball game.  Finalists at the state championship receive four tickets to a Nuggets game and a Nuggets Skills Challenge T-shirt.

Registration forms are available at all City Parks and Recreation facilities and on the City's website at rcgov.org .  Pre-registration is not required but recommended.  Contact Kristy Lintz at Parks & Rec at 394-4168 with questions. Events are free, but travel expenses to the sectional and state levels are on your own.
