Academy Award winner Best Supporting Actor Mahershala Ali & Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen star in Green Book, a film inspired by a true friendship that transcended race, class & the 1962 Mason-Dixon line. Working-class Italian American bouncer Tony Lip (Mortensen) chauffeurs an African American classical pianist Don Shirley (Ali) on a concert tour in the 1960s from Manhattan to the Deep South. They rely on The Negro Motorist Green Book, a travel guide to the few establishments that were then safe for African Americans.
Victor Hugo Green published the first annual volume of The Negro Motorist Green Book in 1936, later renamed The Negro Travelers' Green Book. Green was an African American postal carrier living in Harlem. His books were published from 1936 to 1966 with 15,000 copies printed each year. Many locations had no hotels or motels that would accept African American guests, so Green listed 'tourist homes' where families could rent a room to a traveler. Green sold his guide book by mail order & through black-owned businesses.
