The Rapid City Police Department is proud to announce the upcoming Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) re-accreditation on-site assessment. This is the agency’s 10th accreditation award, and 30th year of accreditation. The RCPD is the ONLY accredited law enforcement agency in the state of South Dakota. Less than 10% of law enforcement agencies in the United States demonstrate their ability to meet the rigorous professional standards set forth by CALEA.
The accreditation program requires the RCPD to comply with 484 state-of-the-art standards covering four basic areas: policy and procedure, administration, operations and support services.
Part of the voluntary re-accreditation process is verification by the team that the Rapid City Police Department meets the Commission’s extensive standards. Re-accreditation is a highly prized recognition of professional excellence in law enforcement.
On March 23-26, a team of law enforcement executives from CALEA is scheduled to conduct an on-site assessment at the RCPD to verify that our agency meets these professional standards.
As a part of the assessment, the public is invited to attend a public hearing to offer comments on the department’s ability to comply with the standards.
The session will be conducted on March 25th at 5:30 p.m. in the 2nd Floor Large Training Room at the Public Safety Building (300 Kansas City Street).
Those who are unable to attend the public hearing but would like to provide comments to the assessment team may call (605) 355-3610 on March 24, from 2-4 p.m. Written comments can also be sent to:

The assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other places where compliance can be witnessed and verified.
After completing their review of the agency, the assessors will report back to the full Commission, which will make the final determination on re-accreditation. Accredited status is granted for a four-year period, during which time the agency must submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance with those standards under which it was re-accredited.
The Rapid City Police Department has been continuously accredited since 1990. During our re-accreditation cycle in 2010, the RCPD was designated as a CALEA Flagship Agency, an award that recognizes law enforcement agencies for demonstrating continued success in the accreditation process. The Rapid City Police Department welcomes the public’s participation in our continuing effort to remain an internationally accredited law enforcement agency.
