RCPD investigating multi-vehicle crash

The RCPD is currently investigating a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of E. Anamosa Street and N. Lacrosse Street which sent at least four people to Rapid City Regional Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

The preliminary stages of the investigation indicate that the incident started shortly before 3:00 p.m. when a South Dakota Highway Patrol Unit initiated a traffic stop on a late model Monte Carlo passenger vehicle. The vehicle fled from the traffic stop southbound on N. Lacrosse Street. Witness statements indicate that the Monte Carlo ran a red light at the intersection of E. Anamosa Street and N. Lacrosse Street at a high rate of speed, causing a chain-reaction crash involving four additional vehicles.

The driver of the Monte Carlo attempted to flee the scene of the crash. The driver was quickly apprehended by law enforcement on scene.

The driver of the Mote Carlo, 25-year-old Andrew Chipps of Wanblee, has been arrested for Aggravated Eluding, DUI, four counts of Vehicular Battery, Driving Under Suspension, and Open Container in a Motor Vehicle.

First responders remain on scene of the crash at the time of this press release. A team of RCPD crash reconstructionists is currently working to map the area of the crash. Members of the public are urged to avoid the intersection until at least 7:00 p.m.

This is a very large and complex crash. No further updates to this incident are anticipated this evening as officers and personnel of the RCPD work to investigate the specifics of the incident. The RCPD would like to thank first responders from the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Rapid City Fire Department, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, and the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks Department for their assistance in this incident.
