Rapid City man arrested after fatal vehicle-vs-pedestrian crash

34-year-old Larry Walking of Rapid City has been taken into custody after a crash that took the life of a pedestrian.

At around 9:25 p.m. on May 14th, police were dispatched to the intersection of 7th Street and Saint Joseph Street for a report of a pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle. On arrival, they located the pedestrian in the roadway. Police worked to provide emergency first aid until a medical unit arrived. A medical unit arrived and continued life-saving measures until it was determined the pedestrian was deceased.

The pedestrian was identified as 47-year-old Paul Walking of Pine Ridge.

After speaking to witnesses and reviewing security camera footage of the event, police determined that Paul, Larry, and a third occupant had been inside a passenger vehicle drinking alcohol while parked in a parking spot. At one point, Paul exited the car and walked around to the rear of the vehicle. Larry put the car in reverse and backed over Paul. Paul was then run over a second time when Larry put the vehicle in drive to pull forward.

Larry Walking was transported to the RCPD Criminal Investigations Division to be interviewed by detectives. He was ultimately placed under arrest for Vehicular Homicide before being transported to the Pennington County Jail.

The investigation into the incident remains active and ongoing by the RCPD, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, and the RCPD’s Critical Accident Reconstruction Team.
