Police investigating burglary/assault in the 100 block of Maple Avenue

Rapid City police continue to investigate an incident in which a suspect experiencing excited delirium burglarized a vehicle, damaged another vehicle, burglarized a motel room, and subsequently assaulted the occupant of the hotel room.

The incident began shortly before 10:30 a.m. on May 6th when police were called to the area of East Omaha Street and Maple Avenue after receiving multiple reports of an individual who was attempting to fight with the occupants of a passing vehicle. It was reported that the male suspect had broken the back hatch of the vehicle and climbed inside. The driver of the vehicle came to a stop in the area of 102 Maple Avenue and the occupants of the vehicle exited the car. The suspect also exited the vehicle, and began causing damage to an SUV parked nearby. At one point, the suspect began head-butting the parked vehicle. Shortly after, the suspect approached one of the motel rooms at the address, broke out a window, and gained access to the room. The occupant of the room was armed with a baseball bat and struck the suspect several times before the suspect left the room.

At this point, the suspect was confronted by officers outside of the motel. The man refused to comply with officer commands. The suspect was pepper-sprayed and Tasered in order to bring him safely into custody. A medical unit was called to the scene to treat the man for injuries sustained during the burglary/assault.

The suspect was transported from the scene via ambulance. He later died at the hospital. His name is being withheld until proper notification of next-of-kin can be made.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the man’s cause of death, and the investigation into this incident remains active and ongoing.
