August 15, 2023 Update:

PARKING STRUCTURE’S WEST STAIRWELL CLOSING

MONDAY (Aug. 21) AS PART OF RENOVATION WORK

RAPID CITY, SD—Effective next Monday, August 21, the Sixth Street west stairwell of the downtown parking structure will be closed for scheduled renovations.  The Fifth Street east stairwell will open up for public access beginning this weekend according to City officials.

            “Crews have been working the past several weeks on the east stairwell next to Fifth Street with the public accessing the structure from the Sixth Street west stairwell,” said Parking Operations Manager Anna Gilligan.  “Contractor crews are at a point where the east stairwell can be opened to public access and work can commence on the west stairwell next to Sixth Street.”

            Both stairwells will be open for access this weekend.  The Sixth Street stairwell will be closed several weeks to public access.

            City Operations Management Engineer Rod Johnson advises the public to continue using caution when driving or walking in the parking structure with equipment and contractor crews continuing to work in the structure.

            The downtown parking structure renovation project is scheduled for completion this fall.

June 29, 2023 Update:

DOWNTOWN PARKING STRUCTURE TO OPEN FOR LEASED PARKING, WEST STAIRWELL ACCESS

RAPID CITY, SD—Sufficient progress has been made on the downtown parking ramp structure allowing upper levels of the ramp to be safely used by lease holders.  SECO Construction will open these areas beginning Friday evening.

           Much of the first level of the structure had been opened to public parking access earlier this month.  Beginning Friday evening, most of the first floor level will be open to public parking and the second and third levels will be opened up again to leased parking, though parking will be limited in certain areas as construction teams continue to work throughout the parking structure. 

          City parking enforcement staff will be contacting permitholders regarding access to the additional leased spaces.  A permit is required for parking in the leased spaces on the second and third levels of the structure between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Outside of these hours, the area is available for free parking to the public, apart from the limited access area on the top level of the parking structure.

            In addition, beginning Friday, the west stairwell on the Sixth Street side of the facility will be opened to public access as work continues on the east stairwell.

            City and contractor officials indicate construction on the parking facility will continue until late fall with detours around the work areas.  Drivers and pedestrians are advised to proceed with caution throughout the facility as the work proceeds and work areas change during the construction period.

June 15, 2023 Update:

CITY TO BEGIN TRANSITIONING PERMITHOLDERS

BACK TO DOWNTOWN PARKING STRUCTURE

RAPID CITY, SD—Effective this weekend, the downtown parking structure will open up an additional 25 parking spaces due to continued progress on the facility’s renovation project by contractors.

         Officials with the City’s Community Development Department indicate the 25 parking spaces are part of the leased parking area of the parking structure, and a permit is required to park in this area between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Outside of these hours, the area will be available for free parking to the public. City parking enforcement staff will be in contact with all permitholders with more information on the transition.

           The structure was first opened to partial access beginning with the Memorial Day holiday weekend.  The access is being expanded with more than two dozen additional spaces available for parking, primarily on the first level and first level ramp

          In addition, City officials indicate both the Fifth Street and Sixth Street entrances to the facility will open to public access this weekend. Both stairwells will remain closed to access.

         “The contractors continue to make very good progress,” said Parking Operations Manager Anna Gilligan.  “This is great news that we are able to open up more of the structure to parking as renovation work continues.”

          The project began in January is scheduled for completion this fall. The public is also reminded to drive with caution and at reduced speed through the parking structure’s access areas due to continue work and the presence of construction equipment.

Crews ahead of schedule, making sufficient progress

RAPID CITY, SD—City officials announced today the downtown parking structure will remain open to partial access as renovations continue on the facility.

The structure was first opened to partial access for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.  Crews from SECO Construction – the project contractor - have made sufficient progress on the current phase of the renovation project to allow parking on the lower level of the structure throughout the remainder of the construction project.

“This is very good news,” said Parking Operations Manager Anna Gilligan.  “We appreciate the public’s patience and the great work of the contractors to open the structure to limited parking ahead of schedule.”

Gilligan says metered parking on the lower level will be $1 per hour.  With continued work and equipment inside the structure, the public is advised to drive with caution and at reduced speed through the parking area.  The stairwells remain under construction and remain inaccessible to the public.

CITY ANNOUNCES FREE PARKING

IN DOWNTOWN AREA DURING HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Downtown Parking Structure will also open

to partial access for holiday weekend

City officials announced today there will be free parking in the downtown area for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend.  In addition, partial access will be available this holiday weekend to the downtown parking structure.

            “From high school graduations to the dedication of the renovated veterans monument in Memorial Park, to holiday shopping activities and the official start of the summer visitor season, there will be a lot to do in and around the downtown area over the holiday weekend,” said Community Development Director Vicki Fisher.  “This will be a great opportunity to take in a movie, walk among the presidents and do some shopping and catch lunch with family and friends.”

            Fisher also announced SECO Construction has made sufficient progress on the latest phase of renovations to the downtown parking structure to allow partial access during the busy holiday weekend. The stairwells remain closed to public access. Drivers and pedestrians are advised to use caution around construction equipment and materials.

            “This is an exciting holiday time in Rapid City and we appreciate everyone’s patience the last several weeks with the needed construction activities in the parking structure,” Fisher said.  “We hope the free parking weekend and partial access to the parking structure will contribute to a holiday filled with great experiences, memories and holiday reflection.”

-January 5, 2023 Update-

The downtown parking ramp adjacent to Main Street Square will be undergoing repairs beginning January 10, 2023 and continuing through late fall 2023. Initial preparatory work will begin on Tuesday, January 10, 2023. The public should expect detours within the parking ramp starting on January 10, 2023 and continuing until Friday, January 13, 2023. Workers will be using lift equipment and traffic will be diverted around work areas with traffic control devices. Please reduce speeds and carefully maneuver around the work area as directed. This will have a minor impact on parking availability. Access will be available to the entire parking ramp during this timeframe.
