Law Enforcement, Special Olympics Athletes Carry Flame of Hope to Rapid City

Law enforcement officers will run across the state with Special Olympics athletes, carrying the Flame of Hope to the site of the 2017 Summer Games in Spearfish.

Members of local law enforcement and local athletes will pick up the Flame of Hope at Rapid City High School at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17. They will run to Main Street Square, ending at approximately 2:45 p.m.  When the group reaches Main Street Square, Mayor Steve Allender will read a proclamation.

The torch will then move on through Western South Dakota and eventually end up in Spearfish where this year’s games are being held at Black Hills State University on May 18th.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run began in 1981 in Wichita, Kansas, as a fundraising vehicle for Special Olympics. Today the Torch Run is the largest funding source for the organization.
