Guns stolen in April burglary located following recent deadly crimes in Colorado

Three firearms, identified as guns stolen from the April burglary of the business at 1441 W. Main Street, have been recovered by Colorado authorities following a series of violent crimes.

On May 5th, deputies of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office arrested a murder suspect following a standoff at a Lakewood, CO motel. The suspect has been identified as 37-year-old Jose Ocampo of Denver, CO. Following Ocampo’s arrest, police recovered two of the stolen handguns. Ocampo was wanted for his involvement in a fatal shooting the prior day in Adams County, CO.

Rapid City Police last made contact with Ocampo when he was arrested for two counts of Ingestion of a Controlled Substance on March 6th of this year. He was also arrested by South Dakota authorities following a high speed pursuit in the Box Elder area on March 22nd.

A third firearm stolen from the Rapid City business was recovered early Wednesday (May 11th) morning from a suspect killed in an officer-involved shooting with the Aurora PD. The shooting was preceded by the suspect carjacking a vehicle at gunpoint before leading Aurora Police on a high speed chase. The suspect has not been identified.

Detectives of the Rapid City Police Department are working in conjunction with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to use this new information in an effort to locate the 22 other stolen firearms, which remain unaccounted for.

“Obviously, we’ve now seen the dangerous consequences of criminals with stolen firearms in their possession,” said Captain James Johns of the RCPD’s Criminal Investigation Division. “The location of the remaining firearms is a priority concern for the RCPD, and we’d urge anyone in our community with information about the burglary to contact police immediately.”

“This case further highlights that we are not immune from the ill effects of crime fostered by the decriminalization of marijuana in Colorado,” said Chief of Police Karl Jegeris. “This is yet-another example of that connection observed by the RCPD in the last year.”

Anyone with information about the stolen firearms can contact Detective Dan Trainer at 394-4134, or they can send an anonymous tip by texting ‘RCPD’ to 847411.
