The Rapid City Police Department is scheduled for an assessment as part of a program to achieve re-accreditation by verifying it meets professional standards. The original on-site assessment was postponed due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions placed on assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). The virtual assessment will be conducted remotely using teleconference software.
This will be the Department’s 10th accreditation award and 30th year of accreditation. The RCPD is the ONLY accredited law enforcement agency in the state of South Dakota. Less than 10% of law enforcement agencies in the United States demonstrate their ability to meet the rigorous professional standards set forth by CALEA.
CALEA requires agencies to comply with 484 state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.
The Public and Agency employees are also invited to offer comments to the assessment team by calling (605) 394-4133 on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Telephone comments are limited to 10 minutes. The local contact is Dave Kinser with the Rapid City Police Department, telephone (605) 394-4133.
Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the Rapid City Police Department’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia 20155.
