2017 South Dakota Festival of Books | Native American Stories & Songs | Joseph Bruchac

As a writer & traditional storyteller, Joseph Bruchac often draws on his Native American (Abenaki) ancestry & his home, the Adirondack region of northern New York.

Author of more than 130 books for young readers & adults, Bruchac's experiences include running a college program in a maximum security prison & teaching in Ghana.

His most recent novel, Talking Leaves, is about Sequoyah's creation of the Cherokee alphabet.

2017 South Dakota Festival of Books | Writing Without Walls | Gene Luen Yang ~ National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature

Gene Luen Yang is the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature.

He has written & drawn many graphic novels, including American Born Chinese, which was a National Book Award finalist, as well as the winner of the Printz Award & an Eisner Award.

His graphic novel set, Boxers and Saints, won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. He has also written for the hit comics Avatar:  The Last Airbender & Superman.

Since 2003 the One Book South Dakota program encourages everyone across the state to read & discuss the same novel.

Selected as a best book of the year by Amazon, BookPage, LibraryReads & NPR, Kitchens of the Great Midwest is a novel about a young woman with a once-in-a-generation palate who becomes the iconic chef behind the country's most coveted dinner reservation.

J Ryan Stradal edits the fiction section of The Nervous Breakdown with Gina Frangello. His writing has appeared in The Rumpus, the Los Angeles Review of Books and McSweeney's: The Goods. Born & raised in Minnesota, he now lives in Los Angeles & has worked as a television producer, notable for the History Channel's Ice Road Truckers & Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch.

South Dakota Humanities Council Scholar, Molly Barari published her first book Dakota Heirlooms in April 2017. The book is a collection of true stories from senior citizens living in the Black Hills. Barari teaches writing workshops & volunteers as a Miss Rapid City Pageant board member.

Singer songwriter Kerry Grombacher plays guitar & mandolin blending cowboy & traditional music with contemporary western songs. His lyrics take us on journeys from New Orleans to the desert Southwest & north to the forests of Montana.

Performing annually at the Custer Buffalo Roundup, Grombacher lives in New Orleans where he’s moved back into his flooded home.
