Ugandan chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi is raised in an impoverished slum by her single mother, played by Lupita Nyong’o. The film is adapted from The Queen of Katwe:  One Girl’s Triumphant Path to Becoming a Chess Champion by Tim Crothers. Crothers discovered Mutesi’s story while on assignment for ESPN.
