Curbside Collection

The City of Rapid City provides residential curbside collection of garbage, recyclables and yard waste to existing accounts and all new accounts within city limits. The service is provided, per ordinance, to residences with no more than four units. New service can be started by calling the City Utility Billing office at 394-4125.

Trash Collection

  • Collection hours are 7:00 am to 3pm Monday-Friday. Cans must be out by 7am to insure proper collection.
  • Containers must be placed four feet apart and at least four feet from fences, mailboxes, racks, or other objects. This allows sufficient space for the automated arms to grab the container.
  • Daily personal household refuse should be the contents of your garbage can.  Items you would normally throw away from daily use in your home.  If you have items that, when put in your container, are more than a foot taller than the top please call for extra collection.  These items may prevent your container from emptying properly into the collection trucks.

Please do not use your garbage can for:

  • Yard waste
  • rolls of carpet
  • construction materials
  • dirt
  • rocks-liquids (paint, chemicals)
  • HOT ash-this WILL melt the can and may cause fire.  Customers are responsible for the replacement cost of melted can.

If you would like to change the size of your garbage container, you may come to the Material Recovery Facility at the Landfill to exchange the cans for free.  We do charge a $15.00 fee to exchange the can at your location.

Extra Garbage

Collection of additional household garbage is permitted for holidays and no more than two or three times a year.  If you have extra on a regular basis your can will be changed to a larger one to accommodate your needs, additional charges will apply. Please call at least a day ahead of your collection day to schedule your pickup with the route driver.  Place extra items to the curb and four feet from the side of your garbage container.  Do not refill the garbage can with your extras once it has been emptied.

Items we are able to collect outside of the can:

  • 6-8 bags or boxes of household garbage
  • empty boxes-must be broken down flat or taken to the recycling center

Items Not collected that may be brought to the landfill:

  • construction materials-lumber, sheet rock, plywood
  • furniture-couches, lounge chairs
  • mattress and box springs
  • carpet

Excessive amounts of garbage or large items we are unable to collect will be left and disposal will become the responsibility of the property owner.
