Win a one-night hotel stay!

To celebrate National Fire Sprinkler Awareness Day May 19, 2018, the Rapid City Fire Department is giving away 2 one-night hotel stays for Sprinkler Selfies.Post a selfie of you and your fire sprinkler with “#sprinklerselfie” and comment “I’m protected at [location]” to our Facebook or Twitter post.

Friday, May 18 at 4:00 P.M. we will randomly select two Sprinkler Selfies for a stay at Cadillac Jack’s Gaming Resort in Deadwood or Fairfield Inn & Suites in Rapid City.

You may post multiple selfies as long as the person and location combination are unique for each photo. For example, if you have fire sprinkles at your work, at your two children’s school, and at home, you could submit up to six entries: 1 of you and your work fire sprinkler, 1 of each of your children in their classrooms, and one of you at home, one of the older child at home, and one of the younger child at home. You would need to post each of the six photos on your page with #sprinklerselfie and reply to our Facebook or Twitter post 6 separate times with I’m protected at work, I’m protected at school, I’m protected at school, I’m protected at home, I’m protected at home, and I’m protected at home.

Before Your Family Is Toast

Fire Is Faster than a Speeding Firefighter

From the time you call 911 until the first firefighters are leaving their station, three minutes has passed. In most home fires, the hallways are blocked by deadly smoke and poisons in one or two minutes after a fire has started. Everything in the room where the fire started can be on fire in less than three minutes.

Home Fire Sprinklers Are Faster than a Speeding Fire

Home fire sprinklers are the single most effective way to protect everyone in your home. One sprinkler will control most fires in the first minute, giving everyone more time to escape or keeping them safe from fire and heat until firefighters arrive.

Home Fire Sprinklers can be installed in any home, including existing homes, mobile homes, and historical homes. Contact a residential fire sprinkler installer today to discuss your needs. In Rapid City, you can install the system yourself with a free permit and professional plans. Contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. Install Home Fire Sprinklers

Written by

Home fire sprinklers are the single most effective means to prevent death and injury from a fire. Sprinklers are especially important for those who cannot escape without assistance, those who may not hear the alarm when sleeping, or those with synthetic furnishings (foam, pressboard, plastic, nylon) in their home. Sprinklers are important for everyone!

Fire Sprinklers are simple devices. When the direct, high heat of a fire touches the sprinkler, the plug falls out and water in the pipe is released. The water cools the fire and keeps it from spreading. This keeps the heat and the smoke levels low, giving people more time to escape.

Only one sprinkler turns on at a time. Only the sprinkler activated by the direct, high heat of a fire turns on. Most fires are controlled by one sprinkler. If the fire is between two sprinklers, the heat may reach both at about the same time and activate both sprinklers.

Smoke and alarms do not activate a fire sprinkler; only the direct, high heat of a fire.

Home Fire Sprinklers come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Can you spot the sprinklers in each of the photos below?

In a home fire you have less than three minutes to escape. Fire sprinklers can stop a fire in less than one and a half minutes.

Prevent Cooking Fires

Cooking is the leading cause of fire in Rapid City. The good news is it is easy to prevent a cooking fire and keep fires small once they’ve begun.

Stop Youth from Starting Fires

While curiosity is a childhood trait, most youth do not play with fire and put themselves and those around them at risk. We can help you turn this curiosity away from dangerous fire-related behaviors.

Keep Your Smoke Alarms Working

Working smoke alarms that will wake you are important. Alarms should be installed on every floor of the home, outside every sleeping area, and in every bedroom. For earliest notification, alarms should be connected so that when one sounds they all sound.

Plan Your Escape

Make sure everyone knows what to do when the alarm sounds and plan for those that will probably not escape on their own.

Fire is Fast

Written by

In only 2 minutes a room on fire can be too hot and too full of poisons for you to escape. Everything in the room will be on fire in only 4 -7 minutes, on average, though it can happen in as little as 3 minutes. It takes 3 minutes from the start of a call to 9-1-1 for the firefighters to start driving to your location.

The amount of synthetics (things made from oils) in our homes has created a great environment for everyday use but a deadly one when a fire starts. Our durable carpets and couches, foam cushions, and electronics all contribute to a hot, fast, and poisonous fire. The single most effective tool to combat this modern fire once it starts is the old and trusted technology of home fire sprinklers.
