Agenda Item Summary:
A request was received in the Engineering Office on May 10, 2016 requesting the requirement to install sidewalk along Cambell Street per City of Rapid City Ordinance 12.08.060 be waived. A 5 foot wide sidewalk is required to be constructed along Cambell Street at the time of building permit, with the property having approximately 1,300 feet of frontage along Cambell Street. The requested variance will allow for construction of a proposed warehouse facility on the property without the installation of sidewalk in the adjacent Cambell Street right-of-way. Adjacent Cambell Street is a principal four-lane arterial street with a dedicated turn lane with no sidewalk and an urban street section with curb & gutter and storm sewer to accommodate drainage. The northern portion of the property is adjacent to East Saint Joseph Street, a principal single-lane arterial street with no sidewalk and an urban street section with curb & gutter and storm sewer to accommodate drainage. There is currently approximately 80 feet of curbside sidewalk on the east side of Cambell Street on the parcel immediately to the south of the subject property.
There are two options for sidewalk; install the sidewalk 1 foot inside the right-of-way or curbside. Public Works recommends denial of the sidewalk variance request.
