Agenda Item Summary:
This ordinance is being proposed to amend Chapter 8.24 of the Rapid City Municipal Code to adopt the 2024 International Fire Code (IFC). The City’s current fire code is the adopted 2003 International Fire Code with amendments. Proposed Ordinance 6641 will adopt the 2024 International Fire Code with amendments. The primary changes are as follows:

  1. Amend current ordinance to match legal format
  2. Lower the cost of fire alarm systems in multifamily dwellings to assist with affordable housing
  3. Ensure safety in multifamily dwelling units
  4. Reduce chances of damage to fire sprinkler systems
  5. Reduce false alarm activation that require fire department response
  6. Allow fire department flexibility to work with Designers and Engineers to possibly lower the cost of proposed projects.
  7. Ensure that the Fire Department has access to areas in multifamily dwellings during an emergency event.
The amendments proposed in this ordinance were created by utilizing the input from City staff, local architectural and engineering firms, and developers, and by the investigative research of Rapid City Fire Department staff.
