Brief Description: The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is a nationwide program that is partially funded through a matching grant from the Corporation of National and Community Service (CNCS). RSVP provides volunteer opportunities for people ages 55 and over to make a difference in their community. The West River RSVP grant is sponsored and administered by the City of Rapid City. RSVP in Spearfish was formally sponsored by Black Hills State University until 2019. In 2019 the City of Rapid City was invited to apply for the grant which formally covered the counties sponsored by Black Hills State University. The grant was awarded in April 2020, and we have been recruiting volunteers and volunteer stations since.
Why is it important for the city: West River RSVP covers ten counties in western South Dakota. Out of our over 530 volunteers, 146 of these volunteers live and serve in Spearfish. We continue to grow our program throughout Spearfish and the surrounding areas.
Fiscal Impact: CNCS requires that each grantee provides evidence of matching/ in-kind funds. Grant funds from the City of Spearfish will be used to help meet the matching requirements and also assist with covering costs associated with the annual volunteer recognition event, expenses for the program’s Spearfish office, and an employee dedicated to the Spearfish community.
