Agenda Item Summary:
This is a planning grant with a goal to improve roadway safety by significantly reducing or eliminating roadway fatalities and serious injuries by developing a safety action plan focused on all users including pedestrians, bicyclists, public transportation users, motorists, and commercial vehicle operators. The grant will be used to develop tools to help strengthen Rapid City’s approach to roadway safety and save lives. Why is this important for the city: Rapid City had 1,401 crashes in 2022, 8 of which had fatalities (a 43% increase from the 3-year average) and 496 had serious injuries (a 10% increase from the 3-year average). The city has developed several plans to improve our roadways including the Bike and Pedestrian Master Plan, Transit Development Plan, and RapidTRIP 2045. This grant will enable the city to consolidate the recommendations from these and other plans and prioritize next steps with a focus on roadway safety. Once the project is complete, Rapid City will have a comprehensive “Action Plan”. The city can then make strategic decisions on which recommendations to implement. There will be an opportunity to apply for implementation grants to fund the recommendations as well. Strings: 20% match, covered by Community Development
