Agenda Item Summary:
The proposed contract with the fire department bargaining unit is for a period of 2 years, with a mandatory wage opener in year 2023 for the final year of the contract. Due to the uncertain financial times both parties agreed they needed to be protected from increasing inflation and/or a recession. To address the consistent issues with lagging wages within our workgroups, the City has agreed to conduct a wage study for AFSMCE employees in early 2023. The goal would be to have the completed wage study to use as the foundation for the negotiation for 2024 wages. Both AFSCME leadership and City Management agree this is a fair contract that was properly negotiated and are happy with the result. Most of the changes are; clarifications from confusing language in the old agreement, addressing processes that needed tuning, and focusing on the pay issues that are ongoing.
