Agenda Item Summary:
The RCFD has recently begun an in-house paramedic training program to increase the number of licensed paramedics within its ranks. During the course of the program, participants are not allowed to use annual leave (vacation). This poses an issue, as members of the IAFF bargaining unit cannot accumulate annual leave from year to year. It must be used the year following accrual or it is lost. The language in this MOU would allow program participants to reschedule or be paid for unused annual leave, at the option of the employee. The language in this MOU was negotiated and included in the 2017-2022 Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City and the IAFF. It meets the Fire Department’s goal of encouraging education and licensure as a paramedic, and it also allows the employees the full advantage of their earned benefits.
