Planning Commission

AGENDA  MINUTES

The purpose of the Planning Commission is to preserve the quality of life and natural environment, enhance economic vitality and diversity, and promote the cost effective delivery of public services of the community. Members of the Planning Commission also serve as members of the Zoning Board of Adjustment.

NUMBER OF MEMBERS

11 (9 voting and 2 alternate members) 

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Individuals with expertise in civil engineering, architecture, real estate, land development, public or private utilities, law, public education, government, community services, business, industry, environmental matters, family issues or any other specialty that will provide a broad, qualified and balanced representation of the community are encouraged to apply. Members of the Planning Commission shall be qualified by knowledge or experience to act in matters pertaining to the development and administration of a comprehensive plan of development for the City.

RESIDENCY/REGISTERED VOTER REQUIREMENT

10 members must be residents of Rapid City, 1 member must reside within the three-mile jurisdictional area. It is an objective to have at least 1 member of the Planning Commission be a resident of each of the wards of the City.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES  

The Rapid City Planning Commission makes recommendations to the Rapid City Common Council with regard to the establishment and implementation of land use planning policies within the Rapid City corporate limits and surrounding areas. Members also consider and advise the Common Council on all proposed changes to the zoning and subdivision ordinances and prepares comprehensive plans for the physical development of the City and its planning jurisdiction.  Members are appointed for 3 year terms, unless being appointed to fill an unexpired term.

MEETING

Meetings are held on Thursdays at 7:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers 11 days prior to the following City Council meeting.
