Crime Prevention

The Rapid City Police Department's Community Service Section is now offering the Rapid City business community the following informational programs.

  • Shoplifting: A one hour program with up to date information on current shoplifting laws and arrest procedures.
  • Employee Theft: A one hour presentation designed for owners, managers, and supervisors on employee theft.
  • Credit Card/Bad Checks: A one hour program on credit card/check fraud, and bad check procedures.
  • Hold Up Program: Up to date information on hold up procedures. Prevention, hold up awareness, and what to do after a hold up occurs.
  • Self Protection/Violence in the work place: One hour program on how to avoid physical confrontations, and current guidelines if you are confronted.
  • Drugs in the Work Place: Over view of the Rapid City drug problem and displays on what types of drugs are currently being used.
  • Burglary Program: Current information on the burglaries occurring in the Rapid City area and how to target hardening of your business. We have a business security survey program available if requested.
  • Telemarketing Fraud: Over 40 million dollars are lost to telemarketing fraud every year. Learn how to say no to those that would take advantage of you with fraudulent telephone schemes. (30 Minutes)
  • Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED): Learn how to make your home, business, or property less likely to be damaged or stolen. This course teaches you how to take a second look at your home or business and how to properly landscape your property so that criminals will move to a different and easier target. (One hour)
  • Crime Free Multi Housing Program: Rental properties present a difficult challenge for law enforcement but this bold, new program takes a multi-faceted approach to problem solving and crime prevention. It is an eight (8) hour class that is targeted primarily to landlords, apartment managers, and realtors. This nationally recognized program teaches class participants about gangs, drugs, CPTED, crime free lease agreements, and how to improve the activity in your apartment complex through a unique certification process. (Class size limited to twenty)
  • Community Policing: Since 1993, the Rapid City Police Department has been actively involved in the concept of Community Policing. Long ago, Sir Robert Peele said, "The police are the community and the community are the police." This philosophy encourages officers to work with community members to work together to solve problems. (30 Minutes)
  • Responsible Alcohol Services Program: This "State Certified", "Nationally Recognized" program is designed to teach alcohol workers how to address problem customers, teaches intervention techniques, how to spot altered identification, and more. There is a fee ($20.00) for this class and all arrangements may be made through the Chamber of Commerce at 343-1744. This course fulfills all of the requirements under the new legislation. (Class size limited to 28) (Special Programs may be requested if you have special circumstances.)
