Rapid Trout

Located in
Founders Park

Constructed from donated concrete with fiberglass reinforcement, Rapid Trout was the winning entry in a public art competition limited to South Dakota artists and restricted to concrete as the medium. The sculpture was completed by Martin Wanserski of Vermillion, South Dakota and installed in Founders Park on Omaha Street west of Twelfth Street. This work symbolizes the importance of concrete to the Rapid City economy while contrasting the solidarity of concrete with the fluidity created by the design. The sculpture installed in 1995 is 80 feet long by 14 feet wide by 8 feet high. The surrounding boulders and tall grass represents the submerged rocks, pebbles, and aquatic vegetation normally found in the adjacent Rapid Creek.
